VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

Below I have documented my visual development processes for several projects, including Keep On Track, my third year industry project, as well as my ART309 module focused specifically on visdev, Wizard of Oz Reimagined.

SPRITES

VISUAL NOVEL SPRITES

As part of my honours project I designed and created character sprites for Romance, a visual novel exploring romance from an asexual perspective.

The sprites created for the protagonist and love interests of Romance include a variety of expressions, outfits and togglable features.

FULLBODY SPRITES

On the left are sprites created for the bandits in Keep On Track before character dialogue was scrapped. On the right is a full body sprite I created of one of my characters for a personal project.

RANDOMISED SPRITES

I created 270+ assets to create randomised sprites for Misery Blissness, a game where you play as a rookie Archangel managing the souls sent to heaven. Souls have their own character portrait generated from out 10 categories of assets, giving each one variety and character!

CHIBI SPRITES

I also easily work in a chibi-adjacent style and can create sprites and icons for more cutesy or laid back games. This is also the art style I use for a lot of merchandise and promotional work (e.g. my work for Forest Tails).

PIXEL SPRITES

These are the pixel sprites I created for my Stardew Valley mod, which added an original character and romance option to the game. I tried to make sure my artwork fit with the pre existing sprites of Stardew Valley so my character wouldn't look jarring or out of place amongst the vanilla sprites.

ANIMATED GAME SPRITES

I created hand-drawn animations for my 2019 DES203 group game project, Deity: Broken God. I animated the main character sprite (left) as well as the prototype level's boss (middle) and the NPCs (right).

ILLUSTRATION

RED SLEEP POSTERS

I created a set of two posters for my friends' Monster of the Week campaign, using this opportunity to explore storytelling and characterisation through composition, angle, colour and lighting.

KEEP ON TRACK KEY ART

I created the key art for the major event categories in Keep On Track, inspired by Paradox games, and had a lot of fun learning to restrict my art to a small canvas and trying a new style of rendering.

TRAVELLER'S JOURNAL

I created a creature species and delved into their society and way of life through my ART308 Traveller's Journal project.

MEMORIES IN MELODY

Below is the UI work I did for Memories in Melody, a short narrative experience where you carve a violin and remember short stories about the First World War. This was part of the IWM's War Games Jam.

FOREST TAILS

Below is the merchandise and promotional work I did for Forest Tails. I was commissioned to create stickers and badges for them to promote their game and studio at their EGX appearance.

ETSY MERCHANDISE

I create badge and sticker designs to sell on my Etsy, focusing on cute original art and pride themed merch. I have made over 1000 sales of my work since I started in January 2022, and aim to continue growing this audience and putting my design skills to use.

ABOUT

I'm El, a 2D artist interested in all things games. I'm currently studying my 4th year of BA (Hons) Computer Arts at Abertay University, where I specialised in visual development and character art.For my honours project this year, I'm creating all of the art for an LGBT+ visual novel project, including visual development, character sprites, environments, illustrations and UI Assets. Check out the project on itch.io!Alongside my studies, I started a small business on Etsy selling my art as badges and stickers in January of 2022. I've amassed over 1100 orders as of November, and have also been commissioned to create similar merchandise for several individuals and also a game going to EGX!In my free time I love working on original stories and creating new characters and worlds. I've worked on games jams, interactive fiction/RPGs (and creating the accompanying visuals), a couple of comics, and a mod for Stardew Valley. I love making, and I hold myself to a high standard of work.
